In einer Höhle in China geboren, überwindet Gao Zhisheng zahlreiche Hürden um schließlich einer der angesehensten Anwälte Chinas zu werden, der vom Volk das „Gewissen Chinas“ genannt wird. Dann aber geht er in den Augen der regierenden Kommunistische Partei zu weit: er erhebt seine Stimme gegen die Menschenrechtsverletzungen des Regimes. Daraufhin wird Gao entführt und gefoltert, seine Familie wird in Geiselhaft genommen. Gao ist gezwungen sich zwischen seiner Suche nach Gerechtigkeit und seiner Liebe zu seiner Familie zu wählen. Der Regisseur Wenjing Ma erzählt in seinem Porträt des Menschenrechtsverteidigers eine Geschichte von Mut, Mitgefühl und Grausamkeit und bietet einen umfassenden Einblick ins moderne China.

Im Anschluss an die Vorstellung findet ein Publikumsgespräch mit dem Regisseur Wenjing Ma statt.
