Knowledge, Contingency and the Taming of Everyday Life in Africa

Vortrag von Elisio Macamo

Seminarraum IE, Institut für Afrikawissenschaften, Campus
Spitalgasse 2,, 1090 Wien

Vortrag

The main purpose of the presentation is to discuss the relationship between knowledge - as certainty over the existence of socially constituted contexts of action - and contingency, i.e. disruptions of routine. The presentation will claim that knowledge transmission is deeply entrenched in the structures of everyday life and proceeds through the ability of individuals to react in creative ways to contingency. A further claim is that given the unstable nature of the way in which individuals experience social reality in Africa the particular circumstances of the African continent offer ideal background against which to describe and analyse knowledge transmission in general.
