Samarium Diiodide-Induced Cyclizations - Our Way to Strychnine

Hans-Ulrich Reissig, Institut für Chemie und Biochemie,

Freie Universität Berlin

Our group investigates reductive cyclizations with samarium diiodide proceeding under dearomatization of (hetero)arenes. Indole derivatives are particularly reactive substrates that stereoselectively afford interesting polycyclic compounds. Based on these systematic studies we developed one of the shortest routes to the alkaloid Strychnine.[1]
