Vortrag

My presentation will focus on the role of multilingual children’s literature in the literacy acquisition and development of learners at school. Based on a corpus of bilingual, mutilingual, dual, and translated books for children in various languages, I will first propose an analysis of the role of translation in the multilingual classroom and show how children’s books in translation can either construct positive relationships of otherness or negate cultural differences. I will then look at the way such books reveal different representations of bi and multilingualism and how they portray unequal relationships between dominant and minority languages and cultures. In a last part, I will argue that we need to go beyond a monoglossic vision of literacy pedagogy and that it behoves teachers in multilingual schools to support the plurilingual repertoire of their students. Thus I will give several examples of pedagogical activities based on multilingual children’s books and explain how it is possible to engage learners in multilingual/multimodal literacy activities and for teachers to feel secure when working with languages they do not necessarily know.
