ie.talks: Lucyna Darowska

Reflections on diversity in research and teaching: practical relevance in theoretical contexts

Seminar room SG2
Sensengasse 3/2, 1090 Vienna

Antrittsvorlesung, Public Lecture

Presentation by Lucyna Darowska (Carl Von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg) followed by discussion, chaired by Petra Dannecker (Department of Development Studies)

The ie.talk begins with a brief discussion of diversity in research and teaching, focusing on which understanding of diversity is adequate in this respect. Next, the conditions and frameworks for diversity in research will be considered. Applying some examples and drawing on the current scientific disputes, Dr. Darowska argues that making research and scientific institutions diverse is a great challenge. She will address some of the relevant aspects,

also from the perspective of theory of knowledge production and political philosophy, and will maintain that the awareness of the ambiguities enables the 'politics' of small steps. In the field of education there are various concepts of implementing diversity and a vivid discourse on the topic. Yet practical experience shows that the educational institutions rather remain behind their claim

to realise diversity as social justice, be it in regard to the access to academia, be it in relation to the curricula or antidiscrimination policies. The ensuing joint discussion will be an opportunity forexchange of various perspectives of participants.
