The War book wave and the English translation of Life in the tomb by Stratis Myrivilis: cultural politics and modern Greek scholars in the interwar period
Hörsaal, Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogäzistik
Postgasse 9, 1010 Wien
Lecture
The presentation focuses on the efforts to publish a translation of Myrivilis' novel “Life in the tomb” in the UK during the early 1930s, when the success of Erich Maria Remarque’s "All is quite on the western front" created a ‘war book boom’ across Europe and the USA. The 1930 edition of "Life in the Tomb" propelled Myrivilis into the Athenian literary field and motivated different cultural mediators in France (A. Protopazzi), Britain (A. Pallis and P. Delta), USA (M. Visanthis / M. Hatsos) and Albania (Dhimiter Falo) to instigate the book’s translation and to contact publishing houses. The Greek government encouraged the English translation by the Koraes Professor F.H. Marshall.
The correspondence with the publishing houses is a case study for the reception of Modern Greek literature abroad, the role of the Greek communities as cultural mediators, the attempt to promote Modern Greek literature through international political and cultural trends and the role of literature in cultural diplomacy. Research material is drawn from the archives of Stratis Myrivilis, Alexandros Pallis, Petros Vlastos, C. P. Cavafy and the Koraes Chair archive in King’s College London.
