Die Europawahlen sind geschlagen; Krisen- und Austeritätspolitik waren dabei im Wahlkampf wesentliche Themen, weniger zentral wurde und wird die Gewährleistung wirtschaftlicher, sozialer und kultureller Rechte (kurz: WSK Rechte) in einer breiten Öffentlichkeit diskutiert. Im Gegenteil, sie werden in Zeiten internationaler Finanzkrisen häufig als nicht leistbar, als vermeintlicher Luxus, hinangestellt. Karin Lukas (Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Menschenrechte und Mitglied des Europäischen Sozialausschusses des Europarats), Gunther Müller (Nachrichtenmagazin Profil), Lukas Oberndorfer (Arbeiterkammer) und Lisa Sterzinger (FIAN Österreich) gehen daher der Frage nach welche Rolle WSK Rechte bei der Politikgestaltung spielen (sollten) und wie der Pakt über die wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Rechte mit der Europäischen Grundrechte Charta und der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention zusammenspielen (sollte). Und was wenn die Austeritätspolitik der EU zu Menschenrechtsverletzungen führt?
Das Gespräch findet in deutscher Sprache statt. Im Anschluss an die Podiumsdiskussion lädt die Forschungsplattform “Human Rights in the European Context“ und das Ludwig Boltzmann Institut zu einem kleinen Umtrunk ein.

Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Roundtables des Projekts „Making the Charter of Fundamental Rights a Living Instrument“, die von der Forschungsplattform „Human Rights in the European Context“ und dem Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Menschenrechte organisiert wird und in Kooperation mit FIAN Österreich stattfindet.
Die HUMAN RIGHTS TALKS finden in Kooperation mit derStandard.at, juridikum, zeitschrift für kritik | recht | gesellschaft und ZIGE.TV statt.
Das Projekt „Making the Charter of Fundamental Rights a Living Instrument“ finanziert sich aus Mitteln der Europäischen Kommission.

The European elections are over; during the election campaign the financial crisis as well as the EU austerity policy have been a central topic. The realisation of economic social and cultural rights (short: ESC rights) on the other hand have been and still are not dealt with as a similar political priority in the mainstream discourse. On the contrary, these rights are often cut off as “unaffordable luxury” during times of financial crisis. Karin Lukas (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights and European Council Committee of Social Rights), Gunther Müller (News magazine profil), Lukas Oberndorfer (Austrian Chamber of Labour) and Lisa Sterzinger (FIAN Austria) will therefore explore the role of economic, social and cultural rights in policy-making and which role the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) can and should play in this context. And, what if austerity policy leads to violation of human rights?
