Vortrag
The marking of a reported speaker within a reported speech by a special form distinguishes the logophoric construction from direct discourse where reference to the reported speaker would be expressed by a first person form and from the familiar type of indirect discourse where referring expressions would be used according to the speaker’s orientation. Logophoric constructions are thus sub-categories of reported discourse, intermediate between canonical direct and indirect discourse. From another point of view, logophors belong to the domain of reference tracking devices overlapping with long-distance reflexives and switch-reference markers. Logophoricity is a phenomenon of an African area roughly identical to the savannah belt.
Major points of discussion are: the relation of logophoric constructions to other categories of reported discourse (within the domain of evidentiality); the place of logophoricity in relation to other reference tracking devices; the internal typology of logophoricity, its possible origins and its areal distribution in Africa.
