Prof. Dr. Marina Zorman (Ljubljana): Hittite conditionals

"One cannot fail to note that the spirit of the Hittites also cares little for subordinate ideas"

Hörsaal 1 (1. OG)
Sensengasse, 1090 Wien

Vortrag

The above remark originally read “One cannot fail to note that the spirit of the Akkadians cares little for subordinate ideas.” It was made in 1892 by the Assyriologist Lester Bradner while engaged in research on Akkadian sentence structure. Bradner (apud Deutscher 2009: 58) also remarked that in Akkadian “coordination is the rule, to an extent which grows rather tiresome to modern ears.” Both remarks also hold true for Hittite, and – as this talk will demonstrate – such a state of affairs in these two languages is not quite unrelated. For this reason, Hittite should also be left out of consideration in future discussions of Indo-European irrealis moods.
