2013 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the World Conference on Human Rights which was held from 14 to 25 June 1993 in Vienna. More than 10,000 representatives from governments, the United Nations and civil society from all over the world attended. This conference has been instrumental in the creation of a new global human rights system, in particular through the establishment of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations.
On this occasion, the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, in cooperation with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM) and the European Training and Research Centre for Democracy and Human Rights of the University of Graz (UNI-ETC) organizes a high-level expert conference on 27 and 28 June 2013.
The conference will take place at the Viennese Hofburg. It will be opened by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, and the Austrian Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger.
Over 100 experts from around the world will discuss ways to further strengthen the international human rights system, on the basis of the accomplishments of the World Conference 1993.
