One of the seminal finds in the most recent excavations at the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri in Thera is a number of clay sealings which had been sent from the island of Crete to Thera sometime before the catastrophic final volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. The retrieval of these sealings alone poses a problem with regard to the extent of authority of Minoan Crete to its neighbouring areas (such as the Cycladic islands). The sealings themselves are, however, not only important for understanding Akrotiri but also for retracing Minoan bureaucracy and administration which can be achieved through their functional and iconographical analysis.
