Das Institut für Ägyptologie der Universität Wien feiert im Jahr 2023 ein doppeltes Jubiläum: Nach der Gründung des ersten, und bisher einzigen, Lehrstuhls für Ägyptologie an der Universität Wien im Jahr 1873 wurde schließlich 1923 das Institut für Ägyptologie gegründet. Dieses 150. und 100. Jubiläum ist Anlass, auf die 150-jährige Geschichte der Ägyptologie in Österreich zurückzublicken.
Begleitend zu einem Jubiläums-Symposium am 24. November 2023 in der Sky-Lounge (Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1010 Wien) ist in der Hauptbibliothek der Universitätsbibliothek (Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien) vom 24. November 2023 bis 16. Dezember 2023 eine Ausstellung zu sehen, die den Wissenschaftler:innen gewidmet ist, die am Institut für Ägyptologie der Universität Wien in den vergangenen 150 Jahren tätig waren. Die Ausstellung beleuchtet deren Biographien, Forschungsschwerpunkte und -projekte sowie ihre Bedeutung für die internationale Forschung der Ägyptologie vom Beginn des Fachs in Wien 1873 als Teil der Orientalistik und Indogermanistik bis zum heutigen Tag.
In the year 2023, the Institute of Egyptology at the University of Vienna celebrates a double anniversary. After the establishment of the first and, until this day, only professorship of Egyptology at the University of Vienna in 1873, the Institute of Egyptology was founded in 1923. This 150th and 100th anniversary is a special occasion to look back onto the 150-year history of Egyptology in Austria.
Accompanying the symposium on November 24th an exhibition is presented in the Main Library of Vienna University Library (Universitaetsring 1, 1010 Wien) from November 24th of until December 16th 2023. This exhibition is dedicated to all the researchers who have worked at the Institute of Egyptology at the University of Vienna over the past 150 years. It highlights their biographies, research focuses and projects, along with their significance within the international Egyptological research community since the subject has been founded in Vienna in 1873 as part of Oriental Studies and Indo-European Studies to the present day.
