Making Women Economists Visible: A Transdisciplinary Approach

Vortrag

The standard history of Western economic thought is curiously devoid of female figures, creating the impression that women have not made any significant contributions to how we think about the economy and its study. In my talk, I will make visible the place of English women in the history of (Anglophone) economic thought, focusing on the decades between 1770 and 1830, which are traditionally seen as the ‘birth’ of modern economics. I will argue that contrary to popular perception, women thinkers were developing original thoughts on the economy, often bringing in a gendered perspective that resonates with economic and feminist concerns of the 21st century. I will use a transdisciplinary approach, which combines literary studies, cultural studies, gender studies, and feminist economics, to argue that (re)discovering forgotten women economists not only enhances our historical knowledge, but also has consequences for economic discourse and practice today.
