Vortrag

Abstract: This talk aims to provide a basic diachronic and synchronic background of different stages of Armenian language. It will first give a brief historical overview of Armenian, beginning with Grabar, the Classical Armenian, presenting the classification of the Armenian language within the IE family, its geographical distribution, the birth of the written culture due to the creation of the alphabet, the phenomenon of Hellenized Armenian (VI-VIII cen.) and the birth of vulgar language (XII-XIII) being the ancestor of Modern Armenian. It will then provide a general overview of Modern Eastern and Western Armenian mainly in Ottoman and Russian Empires (XIX century). Finally, the last section will discuss the present situation of Armenian standards and varieties in the light of modern migratory flows and some political implications in Armenia and in the Diaspora.
