Lecture Series "What is Data Science?"

"Big Data & the humanities"

Lecture by Gudrun Gersmann, University of Cologne and Hubertus Kohle, LMU Munich

Hörsaal 50 (HS) im Hauptgebäude der Universität Wien
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Lecture

The "big data" are currently omnipresent in the humanities as well: if one includes the application of certain data-centered methods and the use of corresponding tools, a wealth of studies can be cited under this heading: The "Distant Reading" analyses of Franco Moretti and the turn to corpus analyses are just two examples of literary studies.

The planned lecture will present and discuss the implications of new data-centered methodological procedures for history and art studies. What does it mean, for example, if image scientists can visualize and examine thousands of images simultaneously? What new insights does it bring for historians if large databases such as "digi press" can be searched for certain parameters?
