Abstract: STYLES OF INDIVIDUATION IN RELATION TO PARENTS AMONG EMERGING ADULTS

The contribution is focused on the multidimensional process of individuation in emerging adulthood, a developmental period bridging adolescence and adulthood in a wide range of postmodern societies. As many other developmental tasks and processes, individuation extends into the young people’s third decade of life. In research and practice, this requires an adjustment of adolescent assessment tools to the developmental context and characteristics of emerging adults. Therefore, a five-dimensional questionnaire on individuation (the ITEA) created specifically for emerging adults will be shortly introduced first, as well as a brief summary of findings based on the ITEA from the dimension-centered perspective. Then, individuation will be presented from the person-centered perspective, which simultaneously provides information on multiple dimensions within an individual. A short description of identifying qualitatively different styles (or types) of emerging adults’ individuation in relation to both parents will be given, as well as portraits of four groups of emerging adults navigating the process of individuation in a different style. Furthermore, links of the individuation styles to emerging adults’ background characteristics, personality traits, and a sense of well-being will be highlighted. Finally, suggestions to account for styles of individuation in psychological counselling and possibly clinical practice will be mentioned.
