Vortrag

One of the most significant peculiarities of Georgian polyphony is its dialectal diversity. It can be said, that in this small country encountered are all existing types of polyphony – various expressions of drone, complex and contrast polyphony. Nevertheless, it is not difficult to notice archetypal melodic and mode-harmonic formulae testifying to their common origin, which presents Georgian polyphony as a united melodic and mode-harmonic system.

This is why in the first part of the lecture, dedicated to the regional aspects of Georgian polyphony, we will discuss polyphony forms of Georgia’s different regions and demonstrate their common and distinctive features.

As for intercultural aspects of Georgian polyphony, it is an inseparable part of the Caucasian musical culture and is closely connected with the music of the Abkhazians, Ossetians, Circassians, Chechens and other North-Caucasian peoples. Central Asian- South Caucasian (Armenian-Azerbaijan, Persian) influence is clearly expressed, as a result of which there emerged based on bass drone polyphony (local substrate) with ornamented-improvised, metrically free (the influence of monodic culture) two upper voices.

Despite intensive intercultural processes, Georgian music has managed to preserve its originality.
