Informed Political Passivity? Understanding New Forms of Political Participation and Civic Engagement

Konferenzraum IPW (A222), NIG 2. Stock
Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien

Lecture

For decades, the changing forms of citizens' political engagement have caused concern among experts on political behaviour. Several possible explanations for the decline of conventional forms of participation have been suggested; and the emergence of new forms societal engagement has been debated. More recent contributions to the literature have suggested that certain forms of what appears to be "political passivity" do in fact reflect the emergence of politically informed and politically skilled citizens, who take a deliberative anticipative stance towards politics and political participation.
