Diskussion, Round Table

Democratic theorists highlight the importance of citizens’ participation in politics. Diverse participatory channels such as voting, engagement in political organisations or protesting are available to citizens to make their voices heard in politics. Over the last decades, two parallel developments are predominantly discussed in terms of political participation: rising political apathy, for instance decreasing electoral turnout, and highly active citizens organizing demonstrations, online-petitions or flash-mobs. Those trends are challenges for representative democracies as well as academics researching political participation.

The aim of the public talk is to debate those counter-intuitive trends in political participation ranging from passive citizens to versatile activists.

- What does decreasing electoral turnout mean for representative democracies in the 21st century?

- Do citizens nowadays participate less or just differently?

- Which potentials does the Internet bear for mobilizing citizens to participate more?

- How can future research tackle the new trends in political participation in an innovative way?

- Can new forms of participation overcome common patterns of social hierarchy or do they replicate and even amplify them?
