"Towards Democracy and Freedom of Association: the Formation of Trade Union Federations in Myanmar"

Freedom of association in Myanmar has been improved since the political reforms that took place in 2011. A labour organization law and its authoritative rule were approved in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

However, there are still areas that need to be dealt with as federations are not strong enough yet. They still lack internal strength to become the major driving forces for democracy and development. Therefore, this lecture will discuss the difficulties faced by two federations, i.e., the Myanmar Teachers Federation and the Myanmar Trade Unions Federation from the perspective of institutionalization discussed by Samuel P. Huntington, Douglass North and Robert A. Scalapino.
