Discipline and Subject: Defining the Teacher Role

Although my main concern is with language teacher education, I take it that the pedagogic design of any school subject, whether it be physics or history or English as a foreign language, involves some kind of reformulation of the concepts and procedures proper to the corresponding discipline so as to make them appropriate to particular learning contexts. I suggest that this process is in many ways akin to that of translation and raises similar problems about the transference of meaning across discourses. Awareness of such problems, and the consideration of how they might be tackled, are, it will be argued, central to all teacher education.
