Wednesday Seminar - James Carrier

Anthropology After the Crisis

Übungsraum, Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie (NIG)
Universitätsstraße 7, 4. Stock, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

Anthropology sees itself as being in a state of intellectual crisis, marked by the theme of the 2009 meeting of the American Anthropological Association, 'The end/s of anthropology?' This seminar describes the nature of that crisis, which has affected the dominant, postmodern stream within the discipline. It argues that the rise of postmodern anthropology echoes the rise of neoclassical economics, which is the intellectual basis of neoliberalism. The economic crisis that began in 2008 has shown the inadequacy of neoliberalism, and the intellectual crisis in anthropology has shown that postmodernism shares that inadequacy.
