Since the great edition of Aulus Gellius by Martin Hertz (Berlin, 1883-1885), improved knowledge of the manuscript tradition has been imperfectly reflected in subsequent recensions; and despite critical attention to the text in the past half-century much more needs to be done. Having undertaken to replace Peter Marshall’s Oxford Classical Text of 1968, which despite faults noted at the time was the best edition when published but was rendered obsolete by the editor’s own subsequent researches, I shall explain my own approach and give examples of my departures from the current vulgate.
