In anthropology worldview studies have long been linked to a mentalist approach to culture, especially from Boas till Lévi-Strauss, with sophisticated analyses in so-called cognitive anthropology. A modest materialistic view emerged as a critique, with its most powerful elaboration in cross-cultural. Thirdly, an evolutionary view on man-environment emerged, speaking of ‘sphere’ instead. Applications can be found today in such technical subdisciplines as ethnomathematics.

Finally, with the virtual disappearance of worldview studies in anthropology , the concept is found in philosophy of science and in religious studies.
