In the web 2.0 era scientists become increasingly engaged in social media, which foster individual visibility and collaboration. Activities within these social media can nowadays be tracked and measured by Usage Metrics and Altmetrics, which complement traditional Citation Metrics.

Mendeley is one of the most promising social media products tailored to the needs of the scientific community. It is a web-based Reference Manager, which allows the generation of bibliographies, annotation of the captured full-texts as well as sharing of citations, papers and notes with the community. Moreover users can build their own researcher profile, promote their research and track their readership.
