Angela Kallhoff: Climate Change

Situating Morality

Seminarraum am Institut für Ethik und Recht in der Medizin (Alte Kapelle)
Spitalgasse 2-4 / Hof 2.8, 1090 Wien

Lecture

Angela Kallhoff's talk "Climate Change. Situating Morality" is the Public Guest Lecture in the framework of the Vienna International Summer University 2013 "Climate Studies".

Climate change causes a range of unintended, yet harmful side-effects. Authors in the field of practical philosophy argue that this situation contributes to a range of ethical problems. This talk aims first at presenting basic models of climate justice. It then discusses underlying moral claims, including the concepts “responsibility” and “justice”.

The talk falls into three section. Section one gives a brief overview over basic models of climate justice. Section two addresses the underlying moral claims. Section three discusses some recent attempts to cope with the tension between moral claims on the one hand and an overwhelmingly complex situation of causes and effects on the other hand. I shall argue that moral philosophy has a limited, yet central role to play in introducing and applying moral concepts.
