The occurrence of very low concentrations of organic substances in water resources in is a major issue for research institutions, official authorities, industries as well as water utilities. Due to the enormous progress and development of analytical systems and techniques a huge number of organic micropollutants can nowadays be detected in wastewater, surface water, ground and drinking water. People are often surprised and even shocked in some cases if they get information from television and media that water is contaminated by toxic chemicals.
There are a lot of items to be discussed:
- More than 70 Mio. chemicals are registered world-wide (according to www.cas.org)
- 100.000 chemicals are produced and applied in Europe; 5.000 to 10.000 of them may be released into the aquatic environment
- More and more organic micropollutants can be found in aquatic systems due to the availability of very sensitive analytical systems
- As a consequence pesticides, pharmaceuticals, chelating agents, artificial sweeteners as well as metabolites and transformation products of the parent compounds are often found in wastewater and surface water
- Limit or guide values are established only for a very limited set of organic micropollutants (e.g. the priority substances).
Thus, evaluation of findings and assessment of micropollutant concentrations in water are a big challenge for research institutions and official authorities. Water utilities have to face these data and the available information and have to develop a communication strategy for their clients and consumers.
