15th Mentoring Lecture with Margit Schwikowski

Glaciers as frozen archives of past climatic and environmental conditions

UZAII Room 2A502
Althanstraße 14, 1090 Wien

Lecture

One important question in climate research is whether the observed magnitude and rate of 20th century climate and environmental change exceeds the natural variability during the last millennium. We use the glaciochemical information preserved in ice cores from high-alpine glaciers to help answering this question. These ice cores represent excellent natural archives for investigating environmental changes for the time periods before the introduction of meteorological instruments. They contain proxy records reflecting regional conditions, which are very relevant for a majority of the Earth’s population.
