Greek students at the University of Padua
Cross-cultural interactions and evolving identities in the early modern age

Hörsaal - Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik

Lecture

University education played an extraordinary role in shaping the cultural and political consciousness of the Greek students that attended the University of Padua from the beginning of the 15th century. The intellectual fervour that arose from the connections and intersections between the two worlds, the Greek-speaking territories on the one hand and the Studium of Padua (always mediated by Venice) on the other, created a dense network of contacts, which contributed to the development of complex webs of knowledge and know-how. The research of the Greek student body in Padua constitutes a very significant case study. Beyond names, numbers, degrees and careers, it leads us to the countless biographies and cultural events, marked by cross-cultural interactions and evolving identities: small paragraphs of life that make up an important chapter in the history of modern Europe or, if you like, of the modern Mediterranean.
