The Demise of the Ottoman Empire in Comparative Perspective

Maurus Reinkowski (University of Basel)

Abstract

There is no singular and specific date at which the Ottoman Empire came to an end. As a truly multi-national empire it ceased to exist within World War One, as a legal entity it lingered on until 1923. As convoluted as the demise of the Ottoman Empire was, as complicated were the causes for its fall. The lecture deals with the late Ottoman period and puts it into a comparative drawing on the similar and the same time distinct cases of the Habsburg and Russian empires' break-down caused by World War One.
