The UNESCO World Heritage sites of Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain) have changed our understanding on the first settlement of Europe and the origin of the Neanderthal lineage. With more than four decades of paleontological and archaeological findings, these sites have revealed an unexpected East-West connection that brings closer Asian and European evolutionary stories. Here we will review the most important and recent fossil findings and will explore their evolutionary interpretation.
