The Russian all-out war of aggression since 24 February has moved Ukraine to the center of many headlines and discussions. Yet little is known in a broader public about the country under attack and its inhabitants, many of whom have fled since the beginning of the war, including to Austria. In this event, scholars from Ukraine will talk about Ukraine and about their research, which they conduct at the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET) at the University of Vienna as scholars-in-exile.
RECET is at the forefront of the relief effort for scholars in distress and of the mission to inform the wider public about Ukrainian history and society. The host for seven refugee scholars this semester, RECET will present its semester program of events that has been heavily influenced and informed by the war.

14:00 - 14:15 Welcome and introduction to RECET (Philipp Ther)
14:15 - 15:45 Keynote lecture (Dr. Anton Shekhovtsov)
Although contacts between Russian political actors and European far-right activists emerged already in the 1990s, they remained relatively low-profile until the second presidential term of Vladimir Putin that started in 2004. As the Kremlin became increasingly anti-Western, contacts with the European far right became more intense and operated at a higher level. The lecture shows that the Russian establishment was first interested in using the Western far right to legitimise Moscow’s politics and actions both domestically and internationally, but then Moscow began to support particular far-right political forces to gain leverage on European politics and undermine the liberal-democratic consensus in the West. In conclusion, the lecture discusses relations between Russia and the European far right against the background of the escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine in February 2022.

Free entry. The event will take place live on Campus and in the English language. No registration is necessary to attend. Only the keynote lecture by Anton Shekhovtsov will be broadcast online on Zoom.
