The European Worm Meeting is the European forum for scientists that work with Caenorhabditis elegans. This nematode worm is one of the most widely used animal models in biology, and has contributed greatly to our understanding of fundamental biological processes and the development of transformative tools, including RNAi and in vivo use of fluorescent proteins. To date, work carried out using this animal has attracted three Nobel prizes, in Physiology or Medicine.

The EWM has been running for more than 20 years, and now brings together approximately 350 researchers from all over Europe and beyond. Attendees come from all levels of the scientific career structure, from 1st year Ph.D. students to experienced PIs. About three quarters of talks at the meeting are given by non-PIs, providing students and post-docs with a platform to build their reputations. The meeting spans a broad spectrum of biology, and provides opportunities to forge links between different approaches and perspectives. Such opportunities are rare in more specialist meetings.

This will be the first time the meeting is held in Vienna. Previous meetings have happened in other European cities, including Cambridge, Bruges, Naples, and Barcelona.
