Although it is rather uncontroversial to proclaim that all schools should support the wellbeing of the children they educate, the detailed contours of the idea are far from uncontroversial. And, even if it is generally assumed that – if schools have any moral or political aims at all – they should be those the fulfilment of which supports human wellbeing, the detailed meaning of this assumption is far from clear. This conference discusses the contours of the ideal of wellbeing as an aim goal of education, its historical emergence, as well as its application in inclusive educational contexts – and especially in the light of the inclusion of children with more severe cognitive disability. The main questions it asks, are: Can wellbeing serve as a truly all-encompassing goal for inclusive education, and if so, what consequences follow from such a conception? The workshop invites leading philosophers of education, historians and researchers in inclusive education to discuss the relationship between wellbeing and inclusive education, its potential and challenges.
