Abstract: What does it mean to rigorously understand, without misleading, a notion of Indian thought? The interpretation of fundamental Sanskrit lexemes and the translation of basic notions of ancient Indian culture (such as “dharma” or “yoga”) has been perceived as an almost impossible task since the beginnings of scientific Indology. An intense debate arose on this issue between European philologists and philosophers, especially in Germany and France. Being an important example of debate in transcultural hermeneutics, this is also a significant episode in the historical development of the different theories of translation. Two different and contrasting attitudes emerge: the “willingness to interpret” on the one hand, and the “willingness to define conceptually” on the other. The first gave birth to the solution of the infinite linguistic approach to the foreign language; the second to the solution of concept formation as a rigorous definition of the meaning of the foreign notion. This lecture specifically addresses the positions and ideas of A.W. Schlegel, W. von Humboldt, Hegel, but also touches on the debate heated in France by Antoine-Léonard de Chèzy, Alexander Langlois, Victor Cousin
