Vortrag
The vexed question of whether the Homeric poems allude to other poems is typically discussed with relation to (1) the Iliad and the Odyssey, (2) the Iliad and the Epic Cycle, (3) and, recently, the Homeric poems and Gilgamesh. In this paper it is looked at how the poet of the Iliad deals with “theogonic” material. Among the questions to be raised are the following. First, is it appropriate to regard these passages as “allusions”? Second, is Homer’s engagement here with a theogonic “tradition” to be understood as engagement with a substantially textually fixed antecedent hexameter poetry? And, third, how should we think that Homer enriches his own poem by harnessing this earlier theogonic poetry (if that is indeed what he is doing)?
