Maria Vargha (Wien): Christianisation and the Beginnings of the Rural Church Network of Medieval Hungary. A Spatial Approach

Hörsaal 30 (HS) im Hauptgebäude der Universität Wien
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

Moderation: Walter Pohl

Abstract:

The eleventh and twelfth centuries in Hungary were of major importance regarding the foundation of the state, and with it, the formation of secular and ecclesiastic power structures. However, sources about this period are rather scarce, primarily written evidence. Opposite to that, archaeology can provide a large amount of data, especially on the development of the process of Christianisation. Rural local churches, field cemeteries, ecclesiastical and secular power centres (bishoprics, monasteries and castles), altogether nine hundred and sixty-three sites dated to the eleventh and twelfth centuries were collected and integrated into a GIS database. The geospatial analysis of such an extensive dataset, focusing on the relations of the different site types in the eleventh and twelfth centuries provided information on the early development of the rural church network, that was not accessible before and revealed new research possibilities of the Christianisation of the region. Contextualising the results in the theories of historical research, a unique narrative of the process became available, based on a phenomenon, the development of the rural local church network, a source material that otherwise was not in the focus of research.
