Remembering places and religions: the case of the Rainbow Mass in Sápmi

HS 31, Stiege 9
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

War memorials and memorial sites that are designed to remember war and mourn the loss are often enmeshed with religious symbolism. In this talk, looking at various examples of war memorials in Europe, America and Asia, Maki Kimura will explore how the materiality of remembering war and mourning of the loss is not only embedded in religious discourses, but also takes the form of particular gendered expression. (Maki Kimura)

In her talk, Mia Liinason will reflect on the memory of place in contemporary religious practices, drawing on her ethnographic fieldwork from the case of the Rainbow Mass in Sápmi in the northern part of Norway, bringing together questions of indigenous and LGBTQI rights with divergent enactments of faith and religiosity. (Mia Liinasson)
