Tournai and Durham: two great Romanesque book collections compared

Elise-Richter-Saal im Hauptgebäude der Universität Wien
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Seminar, Workshop, Kurs

St Martin, Tournai, and Durham Cathedral Priory were both (re)founded as Benedictine monasteries at the end of the eleventh century. Both preserve twelfth-century library catalogues, and both have numerous surviving Romanesque manuscripts: the early development of their book collections can therefore be studied in some detail. Comparison and contrast of their evolving libraries reveal general trends in spiritual and intellectual culture in north-west Europe during the twelfth century, while highlighting distinctive features of each foundation – which, in the case of Tournai, include an intriguing link to Augustine of Canterbury, apostle of the English.
