The Greek Refugee Crisis of 1922 & the International Humanitarian Campaigns

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I and the defeat of the Greek army in the Greek-Turkish war (1919-1922), had as a tragic consequence the forced uprooting of approximately 1,300,000 Orthodox Greeks from the Asia Minor coastline and inner Anatolia. When these refugees arrived in Greece, the country was utterly unable to deal with the insurmountable problems of feeding, sheltering and providing medical assistance to this massive displaced population.
The aim of this presentation is to highlight a significant and largely unexplored aspect of the relief and settlement history of the Asia Minor Greeks, namely the aid of western humanitarian organizations towards the destitute, sick, malnourished and in many cases orphan and unescorted refugee children during the first years of their presence in Greece. In this context emphasis will be given to the reports of the representatives of these organizations in Greece with regards to the problems – both of survival and social acceptance by the native Greeks – that the underage refugees from Asia Minor had to face. The presentation draws material from the Save the Children Fund Archive (UK), the Near East Relief Committee Records (US) and the Archive of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies (Greece).
