Schikaneder Kino

The film series CINEMA & HUMAN RIGHTS which is a part of the human rights film festival this human world is titled #DIREN//BERXWE BIDE//RESIST – spaces, brothers, sisters and others and focuses on various forms of resistance in Turkey.

As a part of this series, we will screen the film “SPIRIT OF GEZI”:

Bringing together the most unlikely compatriots, Gezi Park symbolised the last stronghold against gentrification, runaway capitalism, environmental degradation and an increasingly oppressive government. When met with police brutality, the demonstrators rally together to fight for a future where love and democracy are valued above money and power.

The evening will begin with a panel discussion on the topic of freedom of thought. We are looking forward to a lively exchange between Eugen FREUND (Member of the European Parliament) and ?erife Ceren UYSAL (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights; Executive Board Member of the Progressive Lawyers Association).

Following the screening, we have the honour to talk to Özgür ÇATALTEPE, director of the film, about his work in person.

All discussions will be held in English. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

FREE ENTRANCE.

The screening takes place on the occasion of the awarding of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2017 in cooperation with the European Parliament Information Office in Austria. The Sakharov Prize was established in 1988 and is awarded each year to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the fight for human rights across the globe.
