Abstract: Developmental research over the past decades suggests that the process of individuation in relation to parents prolongs from adolescence into a relatively new developmental period of emerging adulthood, characteristic of postmodern societies. However, instruments to assess individuation in this period predominantly rely on instruments that were originally created for adolescents and thus, disregard important changes in individuals’ psychological resources and their developmental contexts, which may affect several aspects of individuation. This presentation briefly introduces the development of a new questionnaire designed for emerging adults, and focuses on its short form (ITEA-S), describes the five-dimensional structure (connectedness, support seeking, self-reliance, perceived parental intrusiveness, fear of disappointing parents) assessed in relation to mother and father, along with other metric characteristics, and metric invariance across gender, and country. Developmental trends in the five aspects of individuation will be displayed, as well as gender differences in relation to mother and father relying on recent cross-cultural data collected from Austrian, German, Slovene and U.S. emerging adults. The presentation will further outline predictive relations of several individual/contextual factors (e.g., demographics, transitional markers of adulthood, the Big Five personality traits, parent-child relationships) with individuation, and the predictability of positive developmental outcomes based on the aspects of individuation. The ITEA-S is particularly useful in longitudinal and cross-cultural research to investigate the dynamics of the unfolding individuation process, as well as in psychological counseling with emerging adults and their parents.
