Vortrag

This talk will explore the changing culture of fear in France in the last decades of the Old Regime. While the expanding range of police powers reduced traditional risks relating to health and security, new fears emerged in the process – not least the fears of police surveillance and incarceration. Police dossiers from the Archives nationales give vivid expression to the spread of these fears among working-class Parisians in the decades preceding the French Revolution. They also raise questions about the role of archival documents in the history of emotions, a field that has rested heavily on the analysis of printed sources and public discourses.
