'Potent Substances' between Asia and Europe

Redefining materia medica in Tibetan and Himalayan Medicine and Buddhist Ritual

Institut für Südasien-, Tibet- und Buddhismuskunde
Spitalgasse 2, Hof 2.7, 1090 Wien

Seminar, Workshop, Kurs

During this workshop we will examine how medical and ritual substances are identified and categorised in Tibetan traditions, as well as discuss possible impacts on their ‘potency’ within recent EU pharmaceutical regulations (e.g. Directive 2004/24/EC). How is ‘potency’ (re-) defined within the European regulatory context and how does this shape our understanding of substances? We will ask what actually shapes substances as potent medical or ritual healing agents and discuss the challenges we face when researching, identifying, and translating them in local Tibetan, European pharmaceutical, as well as multidisciplinary academic contexts.
