Collectives ranging from informal groups to organizations and institutional actors of various kinds routinely voice their opinions, express their feelings, make assertions, testify, give orders, raise demands, pass laws and verdicts, declare war or states of emergency, and so on. But despite the ubiquity of group speech acts there has been scant theoretical work on this topic, even though there has been a lively interest in collective intentionality and social ontology in recent decades, and even though there is of course the rich and even older tradition of speech act theory. The biggest exception to this is perhaps work on group testimony in social epistemology. In this workshop we want to take some steps towards filling this gap. We invite submissions from philosophers working on speech act theory, collective intentionality and social epistemology and from researchers from related fields such as linguistics, literary studies, law, psychology, and social science. Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to, the following:
What kinds of group speech acts are there? Do group speech acts require us to extend or revise the conceptual apparatus of speech act theory? What consequences to they have for our conception of groups? Under which conditions can groups speak for themselves, or can individuals have the authority to speak for groups? What is the relation between the different degrees of institutionalization and role differentiation of groups and how they perform their speech acts? When do groups have the theoretical, epistemic authority to assert or to testify? When do groups have the practical, moral authority to give orders or to raise demands?
