CINEMA AND HUMAN RIGHTS:

LAMPEDUSA IN WINTER

Top Kino
Rahlgasse 1, 1060 Vienna

Diskussion, Round Table

Viennese filmmaker Jakob Brossmann spent two winters on the tiny Italian island found on the outer reaches of Europe, Lampedusa, which has become synonymous with the plight of refugees departing the coasts of Libya in search of safety in Europe. The film captures the island in the gloom of Winter; the island is shaken by the aftermath of the Autumn’s tragic shipwreck, all tourists have long departed, the fishermen struggle for a living and the summer’s refugee arrivals long for safe passage to the mainland. Yet despite the claustrophobic and uncertain circumstances, solidarity amongst the islanders remains unbroken, with the desire to provide a dignified existence for all those who find themselves on this small piece of land prevailing over all other concerns. A reflective and thought provoking film, which serves to put Europe’s struggles to arrive at humane and cooperative solutions to the arrival of refugees into perspective.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker Jakob Brossmann and Manfred Nowak (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights). Moderation: Sandra Benecchi (Research Center Human Rights)
