Immigrant religions and the context of reception

Public Lecture

HS 48, Universitätshauptgebäude
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien

Vortrag

International migrants are a key force in the globalisation of religious traditions. The presentation discusses the role of the receiving society in terms of migrant religious settlement. It is argued that the receiving society, i.e. the context of reception, affects new traditions in multiple ways. National legislation and welfare state structures, for example, both have an influence on how religious traditions adapt to new contexts.

In comparative studies, for example, it is essential to take the context of reception into account. The development is discussed in the context of advanced industrial societies, especially in the case of Finland.
