Stunning personification of triumph and icon of world art, the Winged Victory (Nike), which now graces the Daru Staircase in the Louvre, originally took pride of place above the theater in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on Samothrace. To mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Victory and in conjunction with the Musée du Louvre’s program to conserve the statue, the American team has renewed investigation of the Nike and her precinct within the Sanctuary on Samothrace. Bonna D. Wescoat, Director of Excavations, shares the results of research on the design, setting, and history of the monument on the island.
