Lecture & Discussion: Spying History from the Air

The National Collection of Aerial Photography, Edinburgh

Aula am Campus der Universität Wien
Spitalgasse 2-4 / Hof 1.11, 1090 Wien

Vortrag

Andreas Buchholz, Geoinformation and Imagery Production Manager at the National Collection of Aerial Photography (NCAP), will be lecturing about recent developments at one of the world’s largest collections of historic aerial imagery. The NCAP collection contains over 20 million aerial photographs covering places throughout the world, many of which were collected for reconnaissance purposes during World War II and the Cold War. NCAP documents and services are used on a daily basis by historians, bomb disposal experts, governmental agencies, media companies, universities and many others.

In 2008, the resources of The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) were transferred to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) under a joint initiative between the Royal Commission, The National Archives and Keele University, and were later renamed NCAP. Since then, many developments have taken place, including accessioning new collections, setting up a public search room, implementing a barcoding system, developing a new Geographical Information Systems (GIS) based catalogue, the setup of a photogrammetric digitisation suite, and the development of the new website ncap.org.uk. The website allows users to access over 270 000 aerial images over 14 000 sorties linked to finding aids, and to browse various rectified mosaics.

The lecture will inform about these developments, and will include the archive’s history, an overview of the different collections and their accessibility, and future plans for the holdings.
