The impact in the last thirty years of inclusive education on educational systems across the world is undeniable. Inclusive education has influenced the way that educational systems and schools recognise and respond to diversity, and especially to students with disability and/or special educational needs. The introduction of inclusive education policies and practices has opened up new possibilities and opportunities for educational participation. These opportunities range from first time access to formal education in countries with emerging educational provisions for students with disability to full participation at all levels of education.
At the same time inclusive education has been criticised for a number of shortcomings including, amongst others, setting unrealistic expectations on schools, and failing to deliver its promises. Inclusive education is neither easy nor straightforward and therefore it constitutes a challenge in both meanings of the word. On the one it has challenged existing educational arrangements and practices by illustrating how they are inadequate for providing for all students and on the other hand, it is a challenging endeavour. Dr. Ilektra Spandagou will discuss some of these challenges within an international, comparative framework.
